Must Have Kitchen Gadgets: The good, the bad, and the messy

The Good:

  1. Silpat (silicone baking mat)-  An environmentally friendly tool that is placed onto a cookie sheet and provides a non stick surface. It eliminates the need for non stick cooking spray.
  2. Collapsible measuring cups and collapsible Strainer- Mega space savers!
  3. Silicone Spatulas- do not melt as easily as plastic spatulas. More non stick than traditional spatulas.
  4. Cutting board plus strainer combo and a small cutting board- for convince and ease of cleaning. It may encourage you to eat more fruits in veggies by making it easier to prepare them.
  5. Basic digital kitchen scale- Makes portion control easy. Can reduce the need for measuring cups which decreases the amount of dishes you need to clean.
  6. Ninja blender- Has blades at the bottom and in the middle. Its easier to clean than the average blender. Relatively inexpensive. Can replace many functions of a food processor.
  7. The Perfect Brownie Pan as seen on t.v.- great portion control tool. Can be used for cakes, casseroles, and anything that you would cook in a pan.

Ninja Blender

The Bad and The Messy
  1. Silicone pull apart cup cake molds and regular sized silicone cupcake and muffin molds- cake falls apart when you try to pull it out of the molds. Hard to clean.
  2. George forman grill- Hard to clean and cumbersome. It is better than grilling on a flat surface but you have to be willing to take more time to clean it.
  3. Any single purpose slicer/ gadget- usually ends up as clutter and its function can easily be done by a knife or other multipurpose kitchen gadget.
    • Examples: Panini press, quesadilla maker, I have never used the Xpress redi-set-go indoor grill (As seen on tv) so i don't know if it works well or not but looks like clutter.
    • Exception: Waffle iron... I don't know of anything else that can do it.

You can easily find most of the recommended gadgets at Bed Bath and Beyond (make sure you have at least one coupon when you go, they mail coupons often) or on ebay
