Tailgate: Food and Alcohol

Alcohol:

There is no such thing as calorie free alcohol. The FDA doesn't require calorie content to be placed on alcohol.

Alcohol, no matter how you serve it, is 7 calories per gram.

You can figure out how many calories are in a drink from the alcohol by using the following formula:
  • Calories from alcohol= 0.8 x Proof x ounces
    • This doesn't include calories from the other ingredients in the drink (like the sugar in wine).

The following websites have alcohol calorie calculators:

Good tailgate ideas:
  • Lean Turkey Burgers cooked with Mrs. Dash Grilling seasoning
    •  Serve with whole wheat bun, tomatoes, pickles, and lettuce.
  • Turkey sausage or turkey brats
  • Lean turkey chili (keep warm on the grill)
  • Baked beans with Canadian bacon instead of regular bacon
    • Just add some Canadian bacon to your can of baked beans. Try to find a can of beans with out too much added sugar.
  • Hummus or light ranch dressing and vegetable tray
  • Fruit salad with grapes, pineapple (canned in its own juice), cantaloupe, and berries (slightly thawed frozen berries will help keep the rest of the fruit cold), and walnuts or pecans
  • Single serving fat free yogurts, sugar free jellos, and puddings (keep cool in ice)
  • Instead of guacamole try the following dip recipe. It still contains avocado but will have less fat and calories due to the other ingredients.

Mexican dip:

1 can of Rotel, Original flavor
1 small can of mexicorn, drained
1 can of black beans, drained
1 avocado, diced
1/2 red onion, diced
Fresh Cilantro, chopped (to taste)
Lemon juice (to keep avocado from browning)

Add the above in a bowl and mix to combine. Serve with chips or whole grain crackers.
